Taxis: When Kakao T Shows a Card Error, "Pay to Driver"

Registering a foreign card in Kakao T often fails. On the call screen, choose "Pay to Driver" and you can pay by card, cash or T-money when you get out. There are alternative apps too.

Checked on Source date
First choice
On the Kakao T call screen, swipe the payment method to the left and choose "Pay to Driver"
App for foreigners
k.ride: sign up with email, Google or Apple ID; foreign cards can be registered. These are premium vehicles, so fares can be higher
Uber
Runs in Korea as "UT". Use your home account and payment method as is; mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area
Backup
If you carry a T-money card topped up at a convenience store, you can pay in almost any taxi

App policies and payment approvals change often. Check each app's official information first.

How to do it

  1. In the ride-hailing app, choose your destination on the map and switch payment to "Pay to Driver".
  2. If the app doesn't work, use k.ride or Uber (UT).
  3. When hailing on the street, show your destination in Korean in large text and ask first whether they take cards.
