Maps: How to Find Your Way When the Internet Drops

Korea restricts sending map data to overseas servers, so Google Maps directions are weak. Naver Map has no official offline feature either, so the surest solution is to turn on data right after you enter the country.

Checked on
Google Maps
You can save a region offline, but it is mainly for viewing the map and most features are limited. Walking directions do not work in Korea
Naver Map
There is no official offline map feature. The regional map download in settings is for saving data, and without internet, directions and search are limited (2026 sources)
KakaoMap
I couldn't find a source on whether offline is supported (needs verification)
Address search
In Naver Map, some searches work only in Hangul. Copy your destination name in Korean ahead of time

Offline features vary by app version and region. Turn it on and test it yourself before you leave.

How to do it

  1. Before you leave, download the offline map of the city you are visiting in Google Maps (for viewing only · directions are limited).
  2. Save the Korean name and address of places you want to visit in a notes app or as a screenshot.
  3. When you arrive, turn on your eSIM data and use NAVER Map or KakaoMap for directions.
