Compiled from travel guide materialsTaxis: When Kakao T Shows a Card Error, "Pay to Driver"
Registering a foreign card in Kakao T often fails. On the call screen, choose "Pay to Driver" and you can pay by card, cash or T-money when you get out. There are alternative apps too.
Checked on Source date
- First choice
- On the Kakao T call screen, swipe the payment method to the left and choose "Pay to Driver"
- App for foreigners
- k.ride: sign up with email, Google or Apple ID; foreign cards can be registered. These are premium vehicles, so fares can be higher
- Uber
- Runs in Korea as "UT". Use your home account and payment method as is; mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area
- Backup
- If you carry a T-money card topped up at a convenience store, you can pay in almost any taxi
App policies and payment approvals change often. Check each app's official information first.
How to do it
- In the ride-hailing app, choose your destination on the map and switch payment to "Pay to Driver".
- If the app doesn't work, use k.ride or Uber (UT).
- When hailing on the street, show your destination in Korean in large text and ask first whether they take cards.
