Many cafe restrooms are for customers only

Cafe restrooms are private facilities for customers, not public restrooms, so many are blocked off by signs, passcodes or keys. In 2026, a cafe that charged 2000 won to use the restroom without ordering became a talking point.

Signs, passcodes on receipts, getting a key from staff

Rules vary from cafe to cafe. We could not check how fast-food restaurants handle this. This is not legal advice.

How to do it

  1. If it's urgent, first look for a nearby public or open restroom (subway station, park, museum, etc.).
  2. At a cafe, order a drink, then use the passcode on your receipt or get the key from staff.
  3. If a place charges a fee, check the shop's sign or kiosk display first.
